Challenges in Medical Automation
Cleanliness & Disinfection Requirements
Medical device and laboratory environments require grippers that can be cleaned and disinfected, resistant to alcohol, sodium hypochlorite, and other disinfectants, with no hard-to-reach areas.
High-Precision Micro-Operation
Reagent dispensing, cell handling, and minimally invasive surgery demand micron-level precision, with micro-volume liquid handling accuracy at the microliter scale.
Sample Safety
Blood, reagents, and biological samples must not cross-contaminate; single-use fingers or easy-clean designs are required to prevent sample contamination.
Regulatory & Certification Requirements
Medical device applications must comply with ISO 13485, FDA, and other medical regulations, imposing high demands on quality and traceability.
Biocompatibility
Parts that directly contact drugs or biological samples require biocompatibility certification and must not react with samples.
High Reliability
Downtime of diagnostic equipment directly affects diagnosis and patient safety, demanding extreme reliability and stability.

Frequently Asked Questions
What distinguishes medical grippers from industrial grippers?
Medical grippers have special requirements beyond industrial ones: 1) Materials: medical-grade, disinfectant-resistant, and in some cases biocompatible; 2) Design: smooth, crevice-free surfaces that are easy to clean and disinfect; 3) Precision: higher accuracy for tasks such as pipetting and micromanipulation; 4) Noise: quiet operation for hospital environments; 5) Reliability: directly tied to diagnosis and patient safety, so reliability demands are higher; 6) Compliance: must meet medical regulations and quality systems. Jodell offers dedicated medical-grade grippers that meet all these requirements.
What do grippers do in IVD instruments?
In IVD (in-vitro diagnostics) instruments, electric grippers/actuators are mainly used for: 1) Sample tube gripping and transport — moving tubes from racks to test positions; 2) Cap handling — automatically opening and closing sample/reagent tube caps; the ERG rotary gripper performs the combined grip-and-twist capping motion; 3) Pipetting — the LRA Linear Rotary Actuator drives pipette tips for accurate aspiration and dispensing; 4) Cuvette transport — gripping and moving reaction and photometric cuvettes; 5) Bead mixing — rotary grippers spin reaction tubes for magnetic bead resuspension.
Are the grippers disinfectant-resistant? What disinfection methods are supported?
Jodell medical-grade grippers are designed to withstand common medical disinfectants: 1) Wiping with 75% medical alcohol; 2) Wiping with 500-2000 mg/L chlorine-based disinfectants (sodium hypochlorite, household bleach); 3) Wiping with hydrogen peroxide; 4) UV irradiation. Rounded, smooth surfaces with no exposed screws or gaps ensure full disinfection coverage. Note: autoclave sterilization is not recommended, as the electronics are not heat-resistant. For aseptic operation, we recommend single-use sterile finger covers.
Do you support single-use fingers?
Yes. The Jodell EPG-Flex series flexible gripper supports 3-second quick-swap fingers and can be fitted with single-use sterile PP/PE fingers. Swapping a finger per sample fundamentally prevents cross-contamination. Sterile-packaged single-use fingers are also available, ready out of the box — ideal for PCR, molecular diagnostics, cell culture, and other high-cleanliness scenarios.
Do you offer end-effectors for surgical robots?
Jodell's high-precision electric grippers and rotary actuators can drive end tools for surgical robots and actuate joints for rehabilitation robots. For surgical robot applications, we offer customization including smaller form factors, sterilization-compatible designs, force feedback, and redundant safety design. Please contact our engineering team to discuss your specific requirements.
